Jess Howells & Arabella Wilson (both coached by Andy Fisher) competed at the Bichfield Harriers Open Meeting on Wednesday, a World Athletics permit event.
Jess threw just over 42m with the 500g javelin a few metres down on her best and Bella ran 56.04 for the 400m her 2nd fastest time over the distance.
Sam is 4th at BUCS
Three WADAC athletes took part for their respective universities at the British Universities & Colleges champs in Manchester over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The best of these was Sam Clifton (coach Jeremy Clifton) representing Birmingham University who finished in 4th place in the mens hammer yesterday with a best throw of 50.79m. Maddie Turner (coach John Miller) representing Durham University just missed out on a place in the 400m hurdles semi finals after finishing 4th in her heat on Saturday in a time of 1 min 08.26 secs. Charlotte Longden (coach Andy Fisher) representing Leeds University was 4th in her 100m heat on Saturday in a time of 12.79 secs and 5th in her 200m heat on Sunday in a time of 26.50 secs.
Elsewhere yesterday Harry Harvey (coach James Thie) ran a time of 4 mins 22.07 secs in one of the many mile races at the 70th anniversary Bannister mile event in Oxford and in doing so went to 3rd on the clubs all time lists knocking good friend James Hennegan off the lists who like Harry recorded his time as an U20 athlete.
Charlie sets another new U20 club record
Charlie Elford Pond (coach Eric Davison) goes from strength to strength just now and threw another pb with the 6kg hammer at the Southampton AC throws competition in Southampton today. Charlie threw 62.72m to go 3rd in the UK U20 rankings and break his own age group club record. Beth Mballa (coach Heather Sheffield) also threw well at the same event.
Weekly track & field preview
The first major track & field champs of the season takes place this weekend with the British Universities & Colleges track & field champs in Manchester over the next 3 days. Sam Clifton (coach Jeremy Clifton) & Maddie Turner (coach John Miller) will be representing their universities of Birmingham & Durham respectively.
The Hampshire multi-event champs along with the quadkids champs, walks, 3000m & may day mile races will be taking place in Portsmouth on Bank Holiday Monday with the club extremely well represented.
Harry Harvey (coach James Thie) has his name on the start lists for the Bannister 70th anniversary mile races in Oxford also on Bank Holiday Monday.
Finally Jess Howells & Arabella Wilson (both coached by Andy Fisher) have their name on the start lists for the Birchfield Harriers open meeting on Wednesday a World Athletics permit event.
Olly runs a pb in Brighton
Olly Wye (coach Mark Upton) took part in the Brighton track night on Wednesday running a new pb of 54.29 in the 400m.
This is particularly pleasing for Olly who picked up a serious injury in the 2nd half of last year and has been building up his recovery since then and has now ran faster than his previous pb at the July WADAC open last year.
Olly next races along with many other WADAC athletes at the Hampshire champs on the 11th & 12th May in Portsmouth.
Tom equals his pb in Oxford
Tom Price (coach Elias Mtshweni) vaulted at the Running2Time Oxford City AC midweek open on Wednesday and equalled his pb of 2.50m.
Tom set this pb at the LAG YDL match in Woodford on Saturday and in doing so went joint 2nd on the clubs all time age group lists alongside his training partner Sam Smith.
As a first year in the age group, Tom’s will no doubt have that 2nd place age group listing all on his own nd we look forward to watching his progress.
Harry breaks club long jump record
Decathlete Harry Crosby (coach Andy Fisher) continues to have the collegiate season of his life in the States as he broke the clubs long standing long junp record at the Buffalo Invitational meeting in Canyon Texas on Sunday.
Harry leapt out to 7.57m to break the mark of 7.38m set by Sam Adams 10 years ago and this places Harry 4th in the UK long jump rankings to go alongside his 3rd place ranking in the decathlon. As with any decathlete, staying injury free has been the secret of Harry’s improvement this season and of course the Texas sunshine helps too.
Bella goes sub 56 in Loughborough
In a remarkable comeback to the 400m after 10 months away with a serious injury that prevented her particpation in the Commonwealth youth games, Bella Wilson (coach Andy Fisher) ran a pb of 55.95 in the Loughborough Open on Saturday. This improves Bella’s standing as 2nd on the clubs all time 400m lists gains her some valuable world ranking points and she looks forward to some warmer weather to improve this time further this season.
In the same race, Elsie Brindle (coach Mark Upton) ran a time of 56.60 secs just outside the best time she set in Yeovil a few weeks ago. These are great times for an U17 as Elsie chases the qualifying standard of 54.50 for the European U18 champs in Slovakia in July. As an 07 birthday, this season will be Elsie’s only shot at the Euro U18’s hence the number of 400m races Elsie is taking on this season rather than the traditional 300m for the U17 age group.
Weekend track & field preview
The first legue match of the season is upon us as the lower age group YDL match takes place at Woodford Green in London today.
This represents a piece of history for the club as it our first appearance in the premier league of the YDL and a strong team of 53 athletes has been assembled to represent the club in this league for athletes in the U13 and U15 age groups.
Elsewhere today Laura Clark & Elsie Brindle (both coached by Mark Upton) and Bella Wilson (Andy Fisher) will be chasing world ranking points at the World Athletics permit meeting in Loughborough today which doubles as the BUCS 10,000m championships. Laura, Elsie & Bella will all the run the 400m with Elsie also on the start lists for the 200m.

Rebekah flies in the Portsmouth wind
It’s windy at the Portsmouth track even on a calm day so imagine the conditions with Storm Kathleen blowing in as wind seppeds of up to +7.5 were recorded for some races at the Portsmouth Open on Sunday.
Nevertheless, some great performances were put down by WADAC athletes and none more so than Rebekah Smith (coach Dave McManus) who won the shot putt with a huge pb of 11.23m and also recorded a pb in the javelin going over 30m for the first time. Christopher Wood (coach Martin McBriar) went over 27m with the javelin and 21m with the discus respectively before recording a pb in the shot putt and Reuben Noott (coach Martin McBriar) also threw well in the discus. Abi & Erin McBriar (coach Martin McBriar) both opened their seasons nicely in the discus.
On the track, Hayden Rogers (cach Dave Sherry) won a windy 100m and won his 200m heat where the wind was legal. Philip Krinks (coach Dave sherry) was unfortunately denied a pb in the 200m by the wind and also ran the 400m. Lily Flute (coach Andy Fisher) opened her outdoor season the 300m and Joe Green (coach David Vosser) had his first track races for the club in both the 400m & 1500m. Ed Fillbrook (coach Andy Fisher) broke his pb in coming 3rd in his 400m heat.
In the 800m Eddie Chambers (coach James Mann) got his track season underway as did training partner Seb Murray (coach James Mann) who also ran the 1500m for good measure. Owen Watts (coach David Vosser) ran the 800m as did Elodie Gill (coach James Mann) and Frankie Bertacchini (coach Andy Fisher).
Harry sparkles Stateside
Decathlete Harry Crosby (coach Andy Fisher) set no fewer than 7 pb’s on his way to getting over 7000 points in the decathlon at the David Noble Relays in Texas at the weekend.
Harry set pb’s in the 100m and 400m on Friday running 10.85 secs and 48.93 respectively then returned on the Saturday to record further pb’s in the 100mH (15.40), pole vault (4.40m, good enough for 3rd place on the clubs all time list), javelin (46.59m) & 1500m (4 mins 29.27 secs). This all added up to a huge pb points total of 7073 which goes 2nd on the clubs all time decathlon lists and just 100 pomits or so behind Dean Showler-Davis’s club record.
Harry is thriving in junior college in the Texas heat at South Plains but despite this has renewed his club membership for 2024 and we are proud to call him a WADAC athlete.
Weekly track & field preview
Two more local open meetings take place this weekend at Basingstoke today and Portsmouth tomorrow.
The WADAC athletes have favoured competing with our composite partners at the Portsmouth Open with lots of WADAC competitors on the start lists and we wish them luck with the forecast good except for some strong gusty winds.
Elsie heads the weekly performance update
It is fantastic to return from a week away to report on some amazing results from WADAC young athletes as the outdoor season gets underway.
Elsie Brindle (coach Mark Upton Mark Upton) heads the list running a time of 56.44 secs over 400m in Yeovil on Monday. This results is good enough to go 3rd on the clubs all time 400m lists and puts Elsie 21st on the early season European U18 lists. Brother Monty Brindle (coach Mark Upton) also ran the 400m finishing in a time of 57.45 secs. Also competing on Easter Monday was Tom Price (coach Elias Mtshweni) who grabbed 3rd place on the clubs age group all time lists all to himself with a new pb of 2.40m in the pole vault. Sister Amber Price (coach James Mann) also pb’d but in the 800m running 2 mins 35.65 secs. Yeovil’s meeting was spread over 2 days with the first day on Easter Saturday. Rebekah Smith (coach Dave McManus) had a great day running an impressive 11.91 into a stiff wind in the 80m hurdles and followed this with a new pb of 5.17m in the long jump.
Bracknell’s open meeting also took place on Easter Saturday and Elsie Brindle started a busy weekend by running a time of 39.95 secs to go 3rd on the clubs all time age group 300m lists just ahead of Abi Dennison who is interestingly now a social media influencer in stregth & conditioning. Elsie also ran 25.57 secs to win the 200m. Hayden Rogers (coach Dave Sherry) continued his fine start to the season by winning his heats in both 100m & 200m. Monty Brindle was 3rd in his 400m heat in a new pb of 56.69 secs. Oliver Wye (coach Mark Upton) ran pb’s in both 100m & 200m in the U17 mens age group with brother Rhys (coach Mark Upton) doing exactly the same in the U15 age group.
In midweek action in Watford on Wednesday were the Tom’s Jacob’s & Evans (both coached by James Mann) both recorded pb’s in the 1500m. Thomas Jacob’s time of 3 mins 59.79 secs saw him dip under 4 mins for the first time and go 3rd on the clubs all time age group 1500m lists. Thomas Evans also pb’s with a time of 4 mins 5.47 secs. A further pb was achieved by Joao Otto De Souza (coach James Mann) who ran 9 min 39.78 secs in the 3000m.
